Wrest Park

Handicap tournament 11-12 September

Report by manager Geoff Strutt

The format was a Hands ladder (Egyptian) as described in the Gaunt and Wheeler Booklet on ‘Croquet Management’.

With only 12 entries it was possible to play all games without double banking. There were no time limits imposed; but, to compensate, for opponents whose combined handicap exceeded 14 and 19, reduced lengths of game were imposed of 22 points and 18 points respectively.

Some confusion arose for those players starting at hoop 3 for the 22 point game and in future I would recommend a start at hoops 1 and 5 (like the hoops 1 and 3-back for the 18 point game).  This having been said, the arrangements were acceptable to most players.  At least, I did not hear any reports or rumbles of discontent!

70 games (including 6 of 22 points and 3 of 18 points) were completed giving players an average (mean) of nearly six games.  Sadly two players only managed 4 games; but otherwise the advertised minimum number of games was achieved.

The final rankings were as follows:

The overall winner was Omeid Hallam, seen opposite receiving his prize from Geoff, with Terry Mahoney taking the prize for the lower handicap players.
