Apps Heley Award 2017

Every two years the CA make awards to clubs which have made most progress at national or local level in any two of the previous three years. There are three awards: the Townsend for one or two lawn clubs, the Apps Heley for clubs with three or four lawns, and the Millennium for clubs with five or more lawns. The Apps Heley award commemorates two women: Lorn Apps, who was CA Secretary from 1948-59 and a formidable player in the inter-war years, winning the President’s Cup in 1936, and Pat Heley, whose private lawn near Cambridge helped to nurture generations of undergraduates and had a postgraduate croquet club named after her in 1964.

Wrest Park’s application for the Apps Heley award was prompted by an email from Richard Keighley on 29 December, which left a fortnight to prepare and submit an application to Jonathan Toye, the EACF Development Officer. This was then forwarded to the CA’s Development Committee. The other nominations were from Bath, Guilford and Godalming, and Plymouth. The winners were announced by Roger Staples, Chair of the Development Committee on 7th March, and Wrest Park are to share the award with Bath, each holding the trophy for one year and each receiving £250. The awards are presented at the CA AGM in October.

Many thanks to Richard and everyone else involved with formulating our successful application. It was accompanied by some photos showing the progress made on our new site which can be seen here.

The presentation of the award took place at the CA’s AGM at Hurlingham on 21st October. Bath will have the trophy for the first year and Wrest Park for the second year.
