Club GC tournaments 2017

Doubles day - 15th July

report by Richard Keighley

To attract more entries for this tournament, it was announced that pairs would be drawn on the day from two pools of players. One pool was to comprise low handicappers (3-6), the other high handicappers (8 and above). Happily for managers Ross Bagni and Peter Aspinall, there was an identical entry of 8 players for each pool. The draw was made and two blocks of 4 pairs began play on an all-play-all basis in warm and sunny conditions.

Block A was won by Richard Keighley and Tony Meredith with 3 wins. Each of the other pairs had recorded one win and the runners up were decided on a net hoops basis. Richard Skidmore and Sue Meredith were successful to the disappointment of Rob Chatwin and Shirley Hughes and Roger Stroud and Pam Lovell.

In Block B, Roy Bradbury and Susan Savage also recorded 3 wins. The runners up were Ross Bagni and Cherry Smith with 2 wins so no luck for Peter Aspinall and Terry Collis or David Ball and Anne Speake.

In the knock out stage, Richard K and Tony proved too strong for Ross and Cherry, but Richard S and Sue sprang a surprise by beating Roy and Susan 7-6.  They carried their good form into the Final but Richard K and Tony eventually won by the narrowest of margins 7-6.

As the cake-fest proceeded, it was unanimously agreed that the new format of the tournament had been very successful and that games had been very competitive and enjoyable throughout. It is likely that the format will be adopted for future tournaments of this kind.

PS Wrest Park had been well-represented at the GC National Series “B” Class Singles Tournament at Nottingham on 12th July.  Taking part in a field of 24 were Ross Bagni, Jean Ball, Rob Chatwin, Richard Skidmore and Roger Stroud.  To his credit, Ross won and retained his trophy. Jean was a very impressive runner up and the others also had a good day. Ross qualifies automatically for the National Final at Southport in October.

Singles day - 10th June

report by Richard Keighley

Traditionally, this has been a one-day level play tournament. On this occasion, it attracted a modest initial entry of  7 players but this number had shrunk to only 4 on the day before the tournament.  Paul Gunn and Chris Harrison from Wingrave were invited to take part as “guests” to make a worthwhile “all play all” event.

Five rounds of games enabled the tournament to proceed at a leisurely pace in fine weather. Terry Collis (9) sprung a surprise by defeating Cliff Jones (-1) 7-4, but otherwise games went generally to form.
