Advanced Tournament 7/8 August

The winner was Stephen Wright from the Eynsham club, with five wins from seven games.

It was a strong field: of the 11 entries seven were minus players, with visitors from as far apart as Beverley, Chester and Taunton Deane. The problem of having an odd number was resolved as Nick Evans was unavoidably detained on Saturday, which began with Bryan Harral arriving early to finish the mowing.

At the end of the first day Nick Steiner, manager Rod Ashwell and Stephen Wright were level on three wins, Nick completing a triple peel against Richard Smith, with Annabel McDiarmid and David Marsh on two wins each. On Sunday Annabel halted Stephen’s run, winning +24TP, and Rod lost to Nick, but the prospect of a four-way tie was eliminated when Stephen won his next two games, the last against Nick. The other Nick (Evans) arrived on Sunday and lost his first game by the narrowest of margins to Cliff Jones, but made up for it with a win against Derek Knight.

Every picture foretells a story. David Marsh, playing Richard Smith and for peg and 4-back, is about to finish off his diagonal spread leave while Annabel McDiarmid waits to rush green to the same area.

Richard lifted yellow and missed blue and black. David roqueted yellow and sent it out towards penult. He waited for Annabel to play, then rushed blue against hoop 2 and had to roll across to 4-back but failed the hoop. Richard then hit red with yellow and eventually won the game +5.
