Charity 1 ball tournament 26 April

This year’s charity was the Alzheimer’s Society whose symbol is a forget-me-not flower, so everyone was encouraged to include a touch of blue in their clothing. The 1 ball game puts a premium on judging line and length in single ball strokes and croquet strokes are relatively rare, which makes it a good game for those who normally only play GC. The handicap system takes account of AC and/or GC handicaps in calculating a player’s 1 ball handicap.

In contrast to last year the weather was sunny and relatively warm. Some statistics: Players 10 (2024 12), Games 33 (47), Games won by a margin of four or fewer hoops 73% (64%). Games won by higher handicapper 18 (20), by the lower handicapper 14 (21). Games played level 1 (6).

David Woolley was the undefeated winner, and he and runner-up Tim Brewer go through to the national final. George Collin made the most hoops in a turn with five, and we raised £190 for the Alzheimer’s Society. Many thanks to David Marsh for organising and managing the event.

After the 1 ball is over . . . l-r Terry Collis, Peter Aspinall, David Marsh, Gill Brewer, George Collin, Eric Audsley, David Woolley, Tim Brewer

For 1 ball the course is the standard AC course, i.e. 1-6, 1-back to rover and then the peg, so the wining score is 13 - 12 hoop points and the peg point.
