LPG tank replacement 14 February

Using the crane to lift the new tank over the roof of the pavilion
and position it on the concrete plinth.

In late 2023 Calor told us they were going to inspect the LPG tank, and we asked them to postpone their visit in case the pied wagtails decided to make a nest under the cover (see the photo in the Home Page gallery). After doing the inspection last autumn we were told that the tank would be replaced for free, which is a standard procedure once the tank reaches the age of 30.

Delivery was arranged for 8-9 am on St Valentine’s Day, and on a bitterly cold morning the truck and two Calor engineers arrived on time. After sorting out where to position the truck the fittings on the old tank were disconnected and the crane lifted up the old tank and put it to one side. The new tank was then positioned on the plinth, and the two tanks were fitted with hoses connected to a pump. The gas left in the old tank was pumped into the new one, the tank fittings were reconnected, the old tank put back on the truck and the gas supply to the boiler checked.

It all went smoothly, the only drawback being the discovery that the gauge on the old tank had stuck and so there was rather less gas remaining than we thought, but given our low rate of usage it should be sufficient for another season or two.

Transferring the remaining gas from the old tank to the new one.
