GC doubles tournament 16 July

David Ball, last year’s winner with his wife Jean, had earned the privilege of organising this season’s event. Nine pairs took part. An observant bookmaker would have offered very short odds on the pairing of Ross Bagni and Peter Aspinall. Ross has already won 2 GC “B” Class events at Hunstanton and Nottingham whilst Peter’s mantlepiece is full of Club trophies won last year. Eye-catching pairings also included the Wingrave-based Richard Skidmore and Rob Chatwin and David Ball with Roger Stroud, another GC “B” Class tournament winner.

David split the pairs into 2 blocks. In Block A, Ross and Peter and Richard and Rob were joined by Terry Collis and Shirley Hughes, Keith and Eileen Palmer and Anne Speake and Richard Keighley. In Block B, 3 married couples were challenging David and Roger, namely Pamela and Peter Lovell, Sue and Tony Meredith, and Susan and George Savage.

In the event, games followed expected form and Ross and Peter met David and Roger in the Final. Ross and Peter won and were presented with their trophies and an invitation to organise next year before a scrumptious tea was taken. Everyone had enjoyed themselves in warm and sunny conditions and on excellent well-prepared lawns.
