Wrest Park’s cup run finally came to an end on 27 September when the last four singles games listed above were played. It was a tall order as the team were at that stage 0-3 down, the doubles and associated singles having been played on 26 August.

The perennial problems of player availability and mutually agreeable dates meant that permission had to be sought to play the match over two days in contravention of condition 9 (“The match must be completed in one day”) - a situation that Enfield were faced with last year when one of their matches could not be completed due to flooded lawns.

Had a couple of the narrow defeats on time gone the other way . . .  Still, there’s always next year.

v Hunstanton (away)     30 July     won 4-3

Geoff Strutt (9) and Cliff Hayes (20) lost to Bryan Saddington (4) and Peter Brown (12) -13

Peter Aspinall (11) lost to David Haslam (14) -13

David Woolley (7) beat Neil Chalmers (10) +18

David Woolley lost to Bryan Saddington -2

Geoff Strutt beat Neil Chalmers +3

Peter Aspinall beat Peter Brown +4

Cliff Hayes beat David Haslam +2

No eye-witness reports available, but with all the afternoon singles being decided by small scores it was obviously a tight win overall. The next match is against Enfield.

v Nottingham (away)     17 July      won 6-1

Geoff Strutt (9) and Richard Keighley (20) beat Peter Hanley (4) and Derek Blow (6)

Peter Aspinall (11) beat Viv Staley (14) +7

David Woolley (8) beat Neil Bacon (9) +4

David Woolley (8) beat Peter Hanley +19

Geoff Strutt (9) beat Derek Blow

Peter Aspinall (11) lost to Neil Bacon -3

Richard Keighley (20) beat Viv Staley

After a four-year gap Wrest Park re-entered the Longman Cup with Peter Aspinall taking on the often thankless task of finding teams and arranging dates. The campaign began with a trip to Nottingham and a resounding win.
