2019 GC Leagues

An update by Richard Keighley

Handicap league - Western Area

There are four divisions: North and Mid, Central, Eastern and Western. The winners of each division go into a knock-out to decide the overall winner. Our team came close to winning a place in the knock-out. It led the Western Area division for all the season until one bad session cost it the match against Northampton Mallets. Leading by seven games to five at the lunch interval, it needed to win two more games to earn a draw or better still three more games to win the match and secure top place in the group. It was not to be- one game win was all the team could manage.

On the bright side, this was the best place the team had managed since joining the League in 2015.

Team selected from: Terry Collis, Tony Meredith, Alan Gray, Chris Harrison, Roy Bradbury and Richard Skidmore.

B level League - Central and West Area

There are two divisions: Central and West, and North and East.

The  team travelled to Newport in the knowledge that a win or a draw with a superior hoop count would earn them the runners up spot. It was looking good with two rounds of four singles to play. Then disaster struck. No wins in the penultimate round meant the teams were tied at eight games all. Fortunately two wins in the final round meant that the match was tied at 10 games all and a better hoop count of 109 to 103 earned them second place in a group of nine teams.

Team selected from Rob Chatwin, Chris Harrison, Richard Skidmore, Roy Bradbury, Richard Keighley and for the above match only Tony Meredith and Terry Collis.

Terry is a finalist in the National C-Class at Cheltenham in September, and for the third consecutive year Rob Chatwin has gained a place in the National B-Class Final at Guildford in October.

The results of all the matches in the GC Leagues can be found on the EACF website.
